Sarasota had it’s beginnings as a modern town around 1885. Many of the first settlers were from Scotland. John Hamilton Gillespie was one of those who set his stake in Sarasota. It is believed the very first golf course on American soil was built in Sarasota by John Hamilton Gillespie.
